For years I wondered about the possibility of teaching lessons online, but have never pursued the idea, thinking in-person private lessons were far superior and anything else was less than best. The Covid-19 pandemic changed all that when the universe gently nudged (okay, forced) me to begin teaching all of my private students remotely. I was surprised to find that I can teach very effectively online.
Are online lessons right for you? There are many reasons to take lessons online: You may live too far away from any qualified teacher. You may find that you have more options for lessons than what is available in your region. You may not want to travel in inclement weather, or to travel at all for that matter, to save time. And maybe best of all, you could learn in the privacy and comfort of your own home. Whatever your reasons for choosing online lessons, I am here for you.
What do you need in order to have online lessons? First of all, a quiet space in your home that is free of competing sound or distraction. Second, you need reliable Internet with a strong signal that doesn’t fade in and out. Next, you need the proper equipment. Besides your instrument and a stand for your music, you need a tablet or larger electronic device with a video camera and a microphone. You will need to safely place your electronic device in such a way that you can see me easily, and I can see you and your instrument. I contact students using Skype, FaceTime, or a meet-up application of their choosing.
What about an instrument? You should have a well-maintained, playable instrument. For piano
lessons, you need an 88-key piano or keyboard. A keyboard should have full-size, weighted keys and
pedal. For details about any instrument, feel free to ask me.
What age group do I teach? I teach anyone age 5 to 95. Anyone younger than Middle School age
will need adult help with the Skype call. Anyone age 5-7 needs an adult to help with the Skype call
and to monitor the lesson and offer aid when needed.
What books do you need? I choose all lesson books for my students. I will let you
know what you need and you can buy them at a music store or order them online.
Anything else? You need a desire to learn and to progress. You need to set aside practice time.
Without practice, you may progress a little just from attending lessons. But you will progress
much faster if you practice, and be happier as a student and more satisfied with your investment in lessons.
